This nickel has an unusual looking rim to me. Could someone please let me know why it looks like the rim is just not there most of the way around the coin. Is this just damage? Sorry for all the photos I am having difficulty getting full coin images uploaded for some reason.

@morph, with copper cents, the answer to why are the rims missing is inevitably that it was encased. We rarely if ever see encased nickels though. I'm hoping that your overall pics will help us figure out what you've got there.

Between vending machines and coin counters, the rims may have been a altered a bit.
1. The fields and devices are telling me this is half way through after the second polishing of the dies, and the devices are starting to show aging. So the die was entering into the LDS die state at this time. Note the tops of the devices are starting to move towards the rims. Note the bottoms of the EPU are starting to move also in the direction of the closest rims. Note the bottoms of the date are also showing thinning because of the two die polishing. (Making the devices smaller in size.
2. Monticello is showing Machine Doubling on some the devices on the right sides of the last few devices.
3. The mintmark is also showing a weaker top area than the bottom. Die polishing and and wear moving the devices closer to the rim is causing that. Other wise a normal die example of an aging die. That is pretty much what I see on your coin.

Thank you for the explanation, that really does help me understand what I am seeing on many coins. Much appreciated.

A little at a time is better than having a whole lot of information all at once. This way your are seeing what I'm seeing on your coin. (almost like having me there)
