Hello. I was coin roll hunting today and got pretty lucky. About 10 really nice 1960s-1980s great looking coins. I came across this and wanted to know what causes this to happen? Is it a worn die or a misaligned strike. Either way I think it's pretty cool. Thanks guys. I'll post pics of the other coins in the coin hunting section when I get a chance.

Thanks. I always appreciate your speedy responses. So the ring is formed by a die that is basically at its last stages of life?

Indeed, that's a ridge ring--very characteristic of deteriorating dies.

Thanks guys. So some of the guys on ebay are pretty much crooks for selling something like this for over $50. I think its cool and different but without it the coin would be more attractive to a seasoned collector.

See this all the time. Just google ebay US coin errors and about 90%
of them are not actual errors. They prey on people who don't know any better.
It is like Esty with their ridiculous prices, it only takes one unknowing person to buy.

Well they are ripping people off. I refer to them as 'Bottom Feeders.' Selling to the untrained. Then they come here afterwards complaining they were ripped off. Best to know what your are buying, Before the purchase!

That's one of the many reasons I joined this forum. Unfortunately like most things today misinformation is everywhere. I do a little research before most of my posts but I really don't trust the internet. Even PCGS prices seem inflated. I have yet to purchase a coin online other then the US mint. I do purchase bullion from APMEX. All other purchases have been face to face. Thanks again.
