I believe this is a Die Pair two. The grade is tricky.....as we have discussed before. Most collectors will grade this VG to Fine. A knowledgeable TPG might go as high as XF 45(maybe even AU)....I will say VF 35 to XF 40 based on the obverse actual wear. afernbaugh.

Although the obverse is weakly struck, hair, ear, and reverse wheat high points don't lie. The reverse IMO still shows slight evidence of mint luster. Therefore, I am putting this coin as a VF35 grade. Nice Thad!

Another nice coin from Thad... a 1922 no D, I would have too also say VF-35, nice wheat heads.

Even with Lincoln losing the knife fight it grades VF35 in my book. It may go higher with the degree of difficulty in locating these specimens. Nice reverse. Is there a shadow of a D showing. I am looking at the mark that appears to be a D in reverse between the 9 and 2? nlp

Dang you guys....I thought for sure I'd get some of you! The 22D series are TOUGH to grade, just as many other Lincolns with known die/strike issues. You all weren't too far off! Image: 1922noDpcgsREVslab.jpg55.5 KB

HMMMM I am starting to think I will never figure out how to grade lincolns. lol I have tonnes of wheat cents and I grade very low I believe. when I looked at this one I was thinking maybe vg for the head side and xf for the wheats side. in the end I would have marked it as a vg-f on my flip.

Quote: Dang you guys....I thought for sure I'd get some of you! Looking strictly at the wheat kernels, PCGS was generous with the XF40 grade. The top kernels on the left stalk show significant wear not attributable to striking on a "Strong Reverse". '22-D Lincolns are tough to grade even for the pros. I couldn't have gone higher than VF30 on that one. No green sticker for that one.

Agreed Brad! Also, the cheek and jaw are merged....that is not entirely due to the die state either. The large hit to the cheek and the numerous med to minor hits on the obv should crush the grade. Those are more characteristic of a G grade coin.....which to me....indicates a lot of wear. I think the graders were so concentrated on authentication they missed the boat!
