What do you think. Can you guess the grade? It's kind of hard to see, these are the seller's pictures, I don't have the coin or other pictures.

these photos are pretty bad to grade from. you cant see the fields at all. the only thing is that that the strike looks decent. cant even tell if its AU or MS. buy the coin not the slab is the motto. if you didnt buy it, I wouldn't regardless of what the slab says unless it has a return policy

Why do the fields look so textured?

From these pics, it looks like it has a D mintmark, in the wrong place

AU something. Straight or Details can't determine with these pics. Poor lighting, grainy pics. Looks like they shot it with their phone from a distance and zoomed in

Authenticity might be suspect. The textured fields, the odd-looking date, and the abnormally high relief for the eagle's neck feathers don't reassure. Without much better photos and a solid return policy I'd give this one a pass.

Possibly some sort of pattern or specimen striking?

A mottled surface and heavy die polishing lines aren't unusual for a 1917, especially from EDS/EMDS dies. Strike quality for 1917 is all over the cow pasture. @KenBerthiaume, If you are willing, when it arrives, it would be helpful to see clearer photos, especially of the reverse. Closeup photos of these areas would really help. Thanks! Obverse, area next to the rim at 7:00 (bottom of the sun to the rim) Reverse, the first "S" in STATES and the eagle's right wing (our visual left) Reverse, the eagle's left claw (our visual right) and area immediately NW of that claw Reverse, the designer's initials

journeyman eyes here but my first thought was counterfeit and my first impression mean percentage is low 60% boom! coins an impostor counterfeit and really cool junk. KenB if I posted pics like this half a dozen members would run me outta town then tar and feather me so your lucky...or their waiting to really let you have it! I agree with everyone else stay away from it we all know how to take pics especially when selling coins the seller likely ommited clear shots (red flag 1) coin looks funky flag #2. That suckers got riding chaps for leg feathers whoooaaaa

I've owned some high-grade 1917s in the past but have never seen this lemon-peel effect.

That's a weird looking coin. Almost seems plated. Is it in an NGC/PCGS slab or a bargain slabber? I'll say AU details to be generous.
