Having limited experience with TPG, of my own submissions (approx. 100 coins), I would like the CC opinions.

What effect does my stated values, of the coins, have on the ultimate grade given them ? I always give CDN graysheet numbers, for my stated values.

My policy has always been, when selling or submitting my coins, to stay on the conservative side of my own grading opinion. I don't ever want to overstate grade, but I've NEVER gotten a coin back with a higher grade than I stated.

I sometimes feel like it's a subjective process ... who is grading ... having a good/bad day ... customer stated a grade that is too high, penalize ...

I am almost always let down when I open my package from TPG ...

I wondered about this too the one time I sent a small submission in (5 coins with 2 of them being Peace dollars needing to be VAM attributed). It was over 10 years ago, but I vaguely remember it feeling odd that I had to fill out that information. Also my memory may be off, but it feels like they had me put the grade on the form and what VAM I thought they were. I remember thinking "what the heck am I paying you for if I am doing your job." Again, my recollection may be off, but I do recall feeling like I was doing part of the work for them. Curious to hear/see what others think.

The submitter's estimates are how they figure out what to (initially) charge for insurance for the returned coins. If you are drastically off they will make adjustments and charge the difference to your card. It doesn't enter the grading room.

I put in a nominal amount always. I put in what basically grey sheet has for what I think the coin is worth at the grade I assigned.

The stated value has 0 impact on overall grade. As BStrauss3 stated, it's a prelim calculation for shipping charges. The graders are not shown submission forms, and would have no reference to what you quoted as value. Over the years I've been low and high on some values, neither have made any difference on overall grade.

Grading is subjective, there is no right or wrong per se. That said, if you are consistently sending in coins seeking the opinions of a TPG and are let down by the results, you may want to take a closer look as to why the opinions differ.

Thanks for your responses ... I will, as usual, simply need more experience with the TPG systems.

Your stated value has zero weight on the grade assigned. The stated value does determine the service level and shipping costs. Grey sheet numbers are fine for coin value if you want to keep the coin under the economy maximum, so you can get the lower grading fees. On coins grading fees above economy, it is better to use retail price in case the coins are lost in shipping as you would want to get full retail for insurance reimbursement.
