Hi there everyone, I've found an interesting coin in my late father-in-law's collection: It's a George III gold coin. It has a hole punched through the top - the date is 1790 - and it has a bent bottom-right edge. It's very 'slim'. I have looked a little on ebay, and I'm not quite sure if it's a coin, or a token - I'm a complete novice at identification! Also not sure if it's a guinea, a sovereign etc...it's about the size of a modern 10p piece. Any help with identification would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance Caitlin. erafjel thank you for this! I had hoped for it to be gold (obviously!) but good to have your confirmation of this token. It'll be sold, but not for as much as we'd like - it's good to learn though! Thanks again :)

Late 18th/19th century playing token for cards. Most would say "Good times" or something like this, but this is a blatant forgery of a "Spade" guinea. Amazed whoever made it was not hung for uttering (Old word meaning coin forgery).
The fact its survived 200 years is amazing and it may be worth a couple of $ as a curiosity piece.

Thank you everyone for helping and welcoming me to the forum!
Princetane, how fascinating, thank you for imparting your knowledge on this! Hopefully it'll fetch a good price at auction!
Best wishes.

You're right that at the time, anyone making play money would've make it clear it wasn't real.

If you read the reverse legend it says BIRM CWB ET CO, possibly Bagnall Brothers who were Gilt Jewellery Manufacturers at three addresses in Birmingham between 1896 and 1914. Doubt it would have fooled anyone at the time.
