Yes missing copper plating has allowed the underlying zinc core to be exposed and now that is deteriorating. This cent is a spender.

Why is it only on the raised parts like LIBERTY and next to his face and the monument? Just curious?

Zinc rot spreads in a haphazard fashion. Once it gets going it can erupt where the copper plating is most compromised.

JB. I'm new to this as well. A couple months ago I posted a zinc rot penny because I had no clue what it was as well. CCF told me what it was and I set it off to the side. I kept it and labeled it so I could use it as reference in the future.

I have seen"zinc rot" before I just hadn't seen it quite so isolated to the raised portions of the coin. Thank you all for your information every little bit helps to learn the hobby.

Poke one of these zincolns with a straight pin and they will start rotting away. Spender while it still exists.
