Hey all- I recently attributed an 1878 8TF Morgan, VAM 14.20 in MS condition. This is a Hitlist VAM with less than 2 dozen known to exist. What would be your ballpark value for this coin? Thanks.

I don't know of any MS examples yet, I know an EF in details sold in 2007 for close to $5K at a Scotsman auction. Jeff Oxman or Michael Fey would by good guys to contact on this one, also could try John Roberts (ANACS).

I just got it back last week. One of the rarest VAM's I have found and attributed but no comparable examples(none in MS) and very small population. Thoughts?

@livingwater. Wrong coin. This is VAM 14.20 not VAM 14.2.
The 14.20 has less than 24 known examples and this is the only one in MS. This isn't a coin you'd find on the bay.

Okay, wrong coin. I deleted my post for the VAM 14.2. Your VAM-14.20 is really nice.

You may want to post some close-ups. PCGS is not the most reliable source for attributions...

There are minor differences between the more common 14.2 and your rare 14.20. You could post close-up pics of the coin here and on Vamworld to get more opinions. The obverse is clashed and has a die crack like the 14.2. I assume PCGS got it right. If so, a great find!

The die crack from the hair up to the cap fold looks like VAM-14.2 to me.

This would be big news in the VAM world community for sure. I would think Jeff Oxman has one as he had the first complete 8TF set I know of, at least at the time of the first edition of his and Les Harnett's book he did, (I was one of the helpers on that project and listed in the acknowledgement section). This MS63 if it's indeed the 14.20 is quite a few grades above any other I know of.

Just trying to help here. I'm no expert. My knowledge of VAMS is very limited. The VAM-14.20 pics on Vamwold don't seem to have the obverse clash and die crack which is on the VAM-14.2. Here's a VAM-14.20 on PCGS site, graded AU53. It doesn't have the clash, die crack either to my eyes. I had to downsize this pic to download it and it got out of focus.

Both the VAM-14.2 and VAM-14.20 have lines in the cotton bolls. One indicator difference is the length of the triangle raised part from the top of ear going down, which in medical terms divides the fossa areas. The VAM-14.2 is shorter while the VAM-14.20 is longer which goes further past the tragus, see pics. Bluemagoo, if your coin is the long one I assume it is a VAM-14.20 but with clash and die crack? That would be very cool.
