So I found this '51 D nickel on my paw in laws dashboard earlier. At first I thought it was just dirty, or had something on it, but the yellow streaks are on both sides? Almost looks "woody" ish, but upon closer look, is whatever is happening with the coloring also affecting some of the lettering? Almost looks like it affected some of the letters close to the rim, so now I'm thinking maybe damage? Just wanted to see what everyone else thinks

Yikes CCB, I just posted the same thing right before I saw your coin. I posted a 47 but they both look alike.

needs an acetone bath to see if the color comes off, in which case it would merely be staining

I'm pretty sure that's not toning . I'll also go with improper alloy mix .

Does it look like the letters are affected more in that area to anyone else? Is that common? Or is it just showing the DDD in different lights, making it look worse in the brighter areas?

Sometimes it just fingerprints on a coin. But this looks like straight lines areas that was on the stock metal. Also the coin looks like it's been around the block several times. But the weight is probably close to normal.
