Not supposed to happen, but does when the cent is damaged. You are seeing the zinc core that ideally would still be covered by the copper core.

Looks like it has been sanded down.
Soon the zinc will start to rot and you will end up with zinc dust.

No it is not supposed to happen, but it does. people sometimes get bored and deface coins, or are an attempt to fake an error from the mint.
This one was ground down to its cheap metal zinc core.

Agree with the above--post-strike damage, zinc core exposed.

Plated zinc. If acid touches it, it disappears quick.
