Does anyone know why in 1922 there were no Mercury dimes made? I can't seem to find that answer anywhere. Just a few more and my collection is complete!!

Don't know, there were also a lot less than usual made in 1921 as well (2,310,000).

They did however mint a very large number in 1920 (92,021,000) maybe they just happened to have enough for a couple of years!

I notice there is another gap in 1932 and 1933. Was this down to the depression?

There were no 1922 nickels, quarters or halves, either. I think the Mint's reasoning was that there were "enough" coins in circulation. Many of the 1921 issues (especially nickels) were not released into circulation until 1922 or even 1923, when production resumed.

I would say the PostWorld War I recession was the reason. It lasted from 1918-1921, but I would guess the supply of coins in 1921 and 1922 was enough that only cents needed to be made in 1922 (only made in Denver at that) and not much of dimes, quarters, and halves in 1921.

Don't forget that dimes, quarters, and halves was decent money in 1922. The average wages was about $26 a week in New York city in 1922. I am sure it was a lot less than that in most of the country.

I think sfwusc has got it. There was a fairly sharp business downturn after the war. If you look at mintages of any coin in the twenties, that figure just does not approach modern figures. I have a set of liberty Walking halves (sans the 1921-D) and have always been fascinated with the years not made.

So do you think we can expect some gaps in years now we are currently in one of the worst recessions on record?

(I don't think so given the money mints make on seigniorage and selling commemoratives!)

I've read many articles that state the immense mintage of silver dollars in 1921 and 1922 was the main reason for reduced coinage of other denominations. Basically, the mints were directed to make dollars to back silver certificates and that's pretty much all they did.

If you are looking for a 1922 Peace dollar, you'll quickly find out there are LOTS of them available!
