Hello, I think I am getting better at vetting Morgans, but this one I need help with. Is this an 1896 O Regular strike? 1896 Micro o ? 1896 Micro o counterfeit? Diameter is right, it looks right under a loupe, weights right for a cull (25.80), and pings. Any thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks,

It looks genuine, although not a micro o variety.

@jac & mrh thanks. I've concluded it's a regular O. I wasn't necessarily concerned it was fake, but happy for the confirmation!

steelheadwill has given you the link to what I think you were referring too, with the "counterfeit" (privately made). I do not see the die crack at TED though. You would need to get closeups of those areas to confirm or deny.

Agreed makescents, I think there's 3 different examples shown and described in vamworlds 1896o 'privately made' Grouping with C3 reverse and large O, these are about as difficult to identify as they come Especially when dealing with online photos. Others can be spotted easily, as with the slanted micro o's, any with the prominent die cracks at un of unum, or one of the many with incorrect reverse type for year.

steelheadwill, it is very apparent that you are much more well versed in these than I will ever be. What very little I know about them has just been read, never laid hands on any year of the privately made. Very cool piece of history though.

Rome21 and makescents, The online vamworld listings make it fairly simple to id most of these contemporary counterfeit issues, much simpler than using the Morgan and Peace dollar book. Later issues seem more common, they're documented 1893-1902, I've found many on the bay listed as genuine, if they're already id'ed As cfts, the price goes up. Easiest to spot are those with wrong reverse for date, it changed in 1901. Here's an article detailing the PUP'S. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...4C3-C3_Comps

Thanks @ steelhead... I'll read over the article, look closely at the coin, and send some photos when I get settled tomorrow night... Thanks again.
This one wasnt in my 'sell tube' because the 'o' was still throwing me off... Happy the thread got revisited.
