This coin is priced at €300. Hardly nice to look at, but am I correct in identifying a Philip II 1/2 Escudo? It weighs around 1.94 g.

Curious to hear what folks think...

@roma, For sure I don't know a ton about gold coins, but unless those dark spots are encrustations from this piece being immersed in seawater, I wouldn't expect so much surface discoloration. Hopefully others will weigh in too with their thoughts.

@spence. I agree... I should clarify my initial post to include the word "suspect" somewhere in my query. It would have to be a very low carat gold cut with a lot of base metal to do that.

A rather crudely executed contemporary counterfeit - interesting piece. Most likely not gold or a very low fineness gold alloy considering that weight (doesn't look heavily clipped) and the surfaces.
