I'm thinking spooned--perhaps in preparation to make/craft a jewelry piece.

The first image looks like a partial collar, but someone may have helped it along and ruined the value for it. A Partial collar will look like this: But the rest of the coin looks altered. So now it is just a damaged coin.

I think mechanical damage rather than a mint error for this one.

my first thought was partial collar but it also looks like it was intentional damage too. Like someone put this coin an a hose clamp and tightened it.

newdude, it's a CENT, not a "penny". Look on the back of it. And yours is just post mint damage.

Quote: newdude, it's a CENT, not a "penny". Look on the back of it. And yours is just post mint damage What's on the reverse of every US coin is it's value, not it's name. And why the yelling? That's generally considered rude.

Not yelling, just emphasis. THIS IS YELLING! And it's value IS (emphasis) what this coin is properly called. A "penny" is a UK term.

Not disagreeing about the name of the coin, disagreeing with your reason. We don't call it the "Jefferson Five Cents", do we?
And sorry, it's still considered impolite to type in all caps. No one can tell the difference between yelling and emphasis except you.

The US Mint's official name for this coin is "cent." The US Treasury's official name is "one cent piece." The term "penny" is the colloquial name from the British coin of the same name. The US cent has been mislabeled "penny" because historically the US was formed/created by the British and some habits die hard. Just because some people call it a "penny" does not make it correct. And after all, are we not an educational resource here on CCF? As a matter of history, the United States as never [mis)labeled any coin officially as a "penny." Hopes this helps you understand the difference between a " penny" and it's proper name, CENT (emphasis).

Non collectors call them Pennies. The mint calls them cents. The U.S. Mint never made pennies for their coinage. Just cents. UK made Pennies. 23
