Looks like a small lamination. The red color is not evidence of mint bloom but rather some sort of environmental exposure.

Looks more like a die crack if it is on the top of the head.
Rest in Peace

Well the first thing that came to my mind was a small lamination ,then a cracked scull die crack was considered .

I'm leaning toward the die crack assessment. Would like to see the coin in-hand (but that ain't happening).

The fact that it's a woody, the percentages are with a lam. Scroll to the very bottom and read the last sentence. LINK https://www.error-ref.com/improper-alloy-mix/

It's curious, just looking at the penny in hand, it just looks red. I don't even see any discoloration like the photo shows.

I'm on team die crack for this one based on the location. Either way though it is a neat find.

I was on the fence on this one, leaning towards a lam, but the more I look at it, I see why a crack was mentioned and am now convinced (90% sure) it's a die crack.

Die crack, not a lamination. These are called "cracked skulls" and were fairly common on late wheat cents.

I was on the fence as well but think I fell on the other side from you. LOL

Large die cracks and retained interior die breaks are very common in this area in the 1950's. While the interior of the area doesn't look like a lamination, this spot seems to be recessed when looking at the lighting and shadows.

Maybe the OP can enlighten us as to whether the area is recessed or raised?
