Help me, I consistently have this uncontrolable urge to rifle through the tip jar at Starbucks and look for key dated coins, while waiting in line waiting to get served. I just stare and stare looking for that 1936 dot canadian penny without actually touching anything. What other treasures lurk within those canisters I ask myself.

I have a similar problem. I'm not really admiring how well the dude on the street corner is playing his guitar with his feet but I'm defiantly taking a closer look inside his guitar case for silver quarters

Why would you be scared? If you are short a penny you are encouraged to go through it. If I see something I take it and replace it with any cents I have in my pocket, or if I haven't any I will toss in a nickel

Sometimes I look in those clear plastic charity coin boxes for when I'm waiting for my order at a fast food place. I haven't seen anything really old but once I saw several 60's young elizabeth pennies that looked pretty much uncirculated. Not all that valuable I know but they were some pretty nice looking coins.

This is funny, It's like you know your hobby is making you compulsive when_______. I had a Vending and Amusement Business for years, when I started in early 70s it sometimes took my partner , his girlfriend and myself, all coin collectors, sometimes longer to count than one person alone could. We would scour the cash bags for silver and older dates. Found tons of stuff, still have most of it. Always kept an eye out for silver and keepers for 30 years. By the 90s silver was almost vacant in quarters and the only other coin accepted was the Loonie. I STILL LOOK AT A JAR AND WONDER !

There was a donation box (sealed) at the local gas station that had a Mercury dime in it- nice shape- earlier this year. Date was not visible, and box would not be unsealed- too bad.

In response to original post in this thread, I've seen some real nice looking coins in them, but I don't think I would ever look through it without first asking for permision, and if they gave me permision I would leave double or triple whatever I found, saw a real nice quarter, would ask if I can have it, and offer to leave a Dollar in it, or whatever.

Tip jar is totally off limits IMO, but the take-a-penny is fair game!
I saw a nice looking George VI silver dime in a sealed clear donation box a while ago, it was frustrating!

Funny this subject came up as last week I found a 1954 Bright Red Canadian penny at a Dollar store here in Ohio. It was in one of those holders for extra pennies you can use if your short. My wife seen it was a Canadian cent and it looked brand new. I couldn't only imagine whos collection it came out of. I did replace it with a regular one.
