Just based on where I found this (bag of foreign coins) I assume it's fake. What are the tells? The weight is correct and it actually actually appears to be silver.

Looks genuine to me. It matches the VAM-4 die pair. The rim dent would probably detail it, but pretty nice find!

Why assume that it is fake?

From what I see, I would say most likely genuine.

Just out of curiosity, can you tell us more of the backstory?

The backstory on this is that I purchased a bag of foreign coins at a thrift shop. If you have ever done this you know that thrift shop employees throw everything they don't recognize into the foreign bag. You occasionally find 2 and 3 cent pieces because they don't recognize them but you rarely find a silver dollar much less one from Carson City. This bag contained some obvious fake Chinese silver coins (underweight and magnetic). This was the only US coin in the bag. My first thought when I pulled it out was that it was a much better quality fake than the Chinese coins. Why assume it is fake, because you don't pull a CC silver dollar out of thrift shop bags every day or ever in my case. If further feedback continues to suggest genuine I will send it to NGC and see what they say.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Awesome, thank you for the backstory. Wonderful find! You'd be surprised how many rare coins are pulled from foreign coin bins, so it isn't unheard of. Let the morgan VAMers take a second glance at this coin, then send it off!

Agree, the date position and mm look spot on for 1893-CC VAM-4.

EDIT: In terms of grade, it looks like F Details because of the rim knock. The underlying technical grade looks like F-12. Very nice find in a grab bag!

I'd guess that whomever makes up the bags for the thrift shop knowingly slipped it in to a bag with the intention to claim it later (or have an accomplice claim it later).

You got to it before they did!

Luck was on your side!
