I was wondering if this could be a mint error or if someone did this intentionally. Thanks for any help.

It looks like it was plated and the metal piece was attached for some sort of jewelery purpose. Didn't leave the mint that way, a neat find though. Might be silver plated and the arched piece could be silver as well.

That lump of metal was added after this coin left the mint, there is no way that the words of 'EPU' and 'States of America' would not have been struck if it had been there. Also the it looks like flux under and around that lump. In addition this coin was plated after it was added.
