I use a desk that my father gave me when I was a kid. I never really poked around in the back of the bottom drawer. Recently, circumstances forced me to move it and examine the contents, (I am now 81.) Money! Unfortunately, not big bills, but lots of change. And a couple of $2.00 silver certificates. I should say that, as a kid, I was for a few years an avid coin collector. My wife dug out my old blue coin albums, and I was back into it. So I have looked at the date and mint mark on all of these pennies. The bag I am putting them in does not contain any 1931 coins or early pennies with an S mint mark. My question: What should I do with them? I'm not much interested in selling them. Would anyone want them? Or should I take them to a bank and have them converted into paper money? Do banks still do that? Oh, they are about 98% wheat backed, the majority being from the 1940's and early 50's. I also have 30 or 40 Mercury dimes. These, I suspect, might be worth something. Thanks for your help.

Many coin shops will pay 2.5 cents per wheat. You can do that.

to the Community! The Wheat cents are worth around 3 cents each while the Mercury dimes are worth a couple of bucks each. Scarcer dates: better conditions could be worth more! Do not sell until YOU known exactly what you have! Nice find!

Taking them to the bank--rolled in wrappers--has merit. Imagine placing these old coins back into circulation, and the joy it could bring someone just getting started in collecting and searching coin rolls. Just an idea.

To CCF , well if you had the number of required posts by CCF rules I would take everything you have at a fair price . Best to just hold what you have .

You should use your father's coins as a foundation to build a large collection for yourself. Just keep his coins separate forever so you will always have the memory with his specific coins. Common date/condition wheat cents are worth about 4-5 cents retail, and Mercury dimes about $2.00 each.

I would agree to above comments. I would also recommend acquiring the 2023 U.S. Red Book, it's a handy tool for information/VERY vague guess of value on U.S. coins.

Maybe leave some of them laying around in various places where small children might find them. Maybe one or two of them will be inspired to become a numismatist.

I would donate the Wheat Cents to a YN.
The mercs you should sell and get some cash.

Are there any family members that might want them for their collections or to start collecting? Any coin clubs near you, donate them there. Boy/girl scout troops, donate them there. As stated, depending on the dates of the wheaties,2-3¢ each and a bit more if they are older. Mercs has silver value at the least. Obviously, it depends on condition and dates/mints to their true values. John1
