I recently found this coin and nearly passed it over. I'm glad I took a closer look and realized it was a Close AM variety with some sort of strike issue. I'm certain it's what I have labeled it as because I've spent hours examining pictures of other examples and everything about it is right. Other coins even show the same East Die Deterioration in earlier states. I'm posting this for 2 reasons, I don't really know what the process is called that has caused the poor strike on the East side of the coin and I'd like to know how that would affect the grade and value. Thank you for your input.

I have used images from PCGS to verify/identify more recognizable devices. Link below if anyone is interested.

It is a Struck Through Grease. Not convinced it is 1992-D though. We will need coop or mike on this.

Agree with Struck Through Grease but how can you say with certainly that it is a 1992 D.
To me it looks like a 1997

Agree with the above--die deterioration ( Ridge Ring doing its part) and grease. Not sensing a 2 in the date--likely a 7 given the close-in pic. Would love to see the coin in-hand.

The bow tie tells the story. The ODV-037 was used only one year and that year was 1992.

This is pic is of the ODV-038 and it's starting use was in 1993.

the last digit is clearly a 7 - you can see the sharp corner at the top right of the digit. That and going by what Jim states about the bowtie, I would not go on record saying that this is a '92 CAM.

The 1992 has a different jaw.

This is a post 1993-forward cent, which is normal.

It looks like a grease error, but normal for these years. Not a 1992 close AM.

I appreciate everyone's opinion. I to thought it was a 1997. However after really studying the coin it's definitely not a 1997. I have matched every point I can find with other known coins. I'll do some more research and try to get some definition and description. Thanks

Sorry to hear it isn't a '92 CLAM.
Thanks to Jim0815 and Coop for pointing out the design differences.

But with the missing devices and striation lines in the area of the date, I'm wondering if it's an underweight planchet.
(I'm not sure if zinc planchets can be rolled thin or tapered from the end of a strip?)

EDIT: Any chance you can weigh it and let us know?

@Petespockets55, to answer your question about thin planchet, it happens. I found a 1983 D that weighs 2.13 grams. I know, not oriented correctly! Ugh

I agree on the coin not dating 1992 and is therefore not a variety.
