Sometimes I look at examples like this and I think of a plated coin that is wearing through. I'm pretty sure this is a "poorly mixed alloy" error though. Maybe a minor DDR here as well?

If this is indeed an improper alloy mix, it's a type I've never seen before. The green colour makes me think of something growing on it. I think this is damage rather than an improper alloy mix, in my opinion.

Some kind of woody, most unusual.

Very odd, why does it seem to be wearing off the high spots? Can't see that yellow coloring on the rim on either side, and on the obverse the high spots are clear of it. Could it be a woody? don't know on this one - never seen a yellow woodie before.

Thanks gang, I would point out that the grain direction is consistent for both sides making this more likely a mint made error, imo.

Woody, I like them but have a hard time grading them. I don't think it's a DDR

Forget about the yellow , what's all that purple ? Might have been a woody then environment damage took over .

Thanks for the comments.
I do edit the photos but never adjust color or saturation but yes it does have a strange color besides the yellow grain.

I do agree it could be a woody - maybe with all the yellow, I'll call it a 'goldie' and yes I did notice (but didn't mention that the striations on both sides match. But could the alloy mix problem just be a 'shallow' issue - which is why is 'appears' to be wearing off?

I like it, nice find! These extreme wood grain coins are tough to tell if there is a doubled die or RPM, sometimes, with the distorted look they have.

Thanks -Makecents-! Quote: But could the alloy mix problem just be a 'shallow' issue - which is why is 'appears' to be wearing off? Dearborn - If you look at the last photo (reverse rim) you can see the coin's alloy has a blend of colors including gold. I don't know why the surface areas of the dies are more yellow and wearing through but the alloy underneath is still not normal.
