I love these old dark worn nickels, it's actually not terrible but I like the dark patina. There is a V shaped depression towards the rim obverse at 11 o'clock from hairline location into the letter U. Can anyone tell me what this is, please? Thanks!

@new, could it be damage? When an unusual feature is inset, virtually 100% of the time it is damage.

Ya think? It's strange, right? It is banged up pretty good so it makes sense but it's such a strange depression. Thanks, Spence!

If your asking about the line that goes through trust it looks like a possible stain to me. If your asking about the rim specifically then that is damage.

Hmmm, I don't know. The dirt is gathered along the cracked edge, it's indented. But as others have said, it's likely damage. But I don't know for sure. It's odd!

Possible damage to the outer edge of the coin, moved metal on that area. Just coin damage. No premium for coin damage. (If so, then we would have no change to use, as everyone would be damaging coins) Just a spender

There is a slight irregularity to the perimeter of the coin (last T of TRUST) at the incuse area, like it occurred when the proto-rim was being formed in the upsetting process.

I think this is some form of planchet flaw, possibly it was missing metal before being struck.

It's much clearer in person, I still don't have the right set up for photo's. Thanks so much for the input!

The proto rim doesn't control the rim. The die and the collar form the rim during the strike.
