I am new to collecting coins and bought a couple silver dollars (from private) in the last months. I did mainly go by gut feeling, but have studied various websites with grading advice. I am still quite unsure especially about the divisions between XF / AU and AU / MS. So I would now like to compare my grades to what the community here thinks. I hope the pictures are good enough. Here goes no. 1, a 1878 Morgan dollar mintmark S. Edited by HP2001PH 07/15/2022 6:16 pm

 to CCF! We would need a reverse photo to grade, preferably out of the capsule.

I'd say AU-58. Hard to see the surfaces on the obverse, but it might make MS.

Thanks for the reply. Tomorrow (its quite late here now.), I will try to get a better picture of the surfaces.

Obverse photo makes it look like there is a luster break in the field, so AU-58. Better lighting on the photos would help here

@hp, first welcome to CCF.
Second, it isn't a huge deal, but please use full, four digit dates in your thread titles moving forward. It helps with the search functionality. I'll fix these latest few for you no problem. Thx.

Spence, I will make sure to do that. I have better pic of the obverse. Now there a fine scratches evident, I really have not seen them with the naked eye at all before. But actually in bright daylight they are visible if one looks a a very flat angle. From up front they are completely invisible. These photos are cruel... ;D

always remove coins from the holder when possible as they can alter the look of the surfaces. try not to use overhead lighting. natural light maybe on a window sill or diffused light is best
the strike is a little better than a typcial 78(S) so thats a plus. the does appear to be circulation on second obv photo hair but I'm not seeing it anywhere else so it could be cabinet rub. I dont think its from any striking issue as the rest of the devices are pretty good.
luster is broken on both sides. reverse pic not that great probably because we dont have a shot outside the holder
a lot of chatter on the cheek and obv fields. the first set of photos are showing a cleaned coin. this is why its important to take pics outside of holders with diffused light.
without better photos AU58 but the halos on the second obv shot around the stars are pointing towards a cleaning. so AU58 details (cleaned) is my assessment without better photos
