I just saw an article on this fantastic error coin! I was shocked that the fracture is so smooth. The coin will be up for auction later this year.

I'm sure it will be far outside of my budget, but I will be following and wanted to share!

Interesting question. If it broke at the mint, it seems like a mint worker would have to have rescued it, otherwise how would the two halves possibly stay together? If it left the mint together, how did it survive the bagging and handling with a fracture like that?

After thinking about it I do believe that your answer is most likely the right one had it broke at mint it is very unlikely that the half's would have stayed to gether

I'd really like to see it under a scope to see the edges of the crack and the internal metal. Those would give you some indication of natural metal fatigue of a manufactured error. I always see an ad in CW about a dealer who is "the home of the broken silver dollar".

Very interesting! Of all the mint errors, I find this one less attractive than most.

Be careful what you wish for. This coin has a big mouth.

That's Alan Rowe of Northern Nevada Coin. Way back when I was just starting out in coins, I won a scholarship from the ANA for the Summer Seminar as a Young Numismatist. Allan was the donor that made my scholarship happen.

Here is a bit on the coin you mention...
