@pris, I agree that this quarter was struck in Denver. The surface color is likely due to environmental or chemical exposure. It would have been shiny when it was struck.

A Dmm with a broken post.
It probably turned all black at one time and wear on the high spots has worn it off.
Value is 25 cents.

Nickels are called 'black beauties' usually, not quarters. Your is black because it could have been painted black, and that paint is wearing off from circulation wear. notice that only high points are shiny (high points are touched and rubbed more often than the shallow recess of a coin design elements.

Environmental tarnishing/staining/discolourization. Nickels can be a,"Black Beauty" but not quarters, sorry.

The coin was a metal detector find. It was brown in color when first found:

When the coin is circulated, the altered surface wears off on the highest devices:

The longer it is circulation, the darker back the color will change on the lowest areas of the coins design/fields area:

The longer it is in circulation the more of the dark color will disappear. Eventually it will be dull looking circulated coin again. No premium for these, they are just face value coins. Put them back to work, doing their job, making change.
