I see no reason to return a gift from an experienced dealer.

Eager to learn how this plays out. Personally, I'm not seeing a VDB. Would love to see the coin in-hand, but that's not in the cards.

Me I see only probably an D or traces of like D with different angle. the acetone will do nothing on your coin. Nor TPG restoration, they do not use high advance technology for theirs restoration. The only restoration for this is find only at art museums (not all) and is very, very expensive. They us UVA, UVB and UVC in solution in order to disintegrate the oxides. After in an Nano bombardment to restore the surface of the molecular splits. Your coin do not have an easy path to restore and probably will cost more then you can sell with no warranty will be an success.

Tooth paste is dangerous due to the fluoride content. work for Ni but for bronze it is a killer.

My first thought was it's a VDB.

I wouldn't give it back to the dealer..

Send it to me if you don't want it

Hey Everyone,
Thank you all for the input today I really appreciate it! I do have a final resolution to share with you. I did ultimately take the coin back to the dealer. He greatly appreciated the fact I gave him the coin back. He reviewed it under a loupe and he said there was no doubt that it was an S VDB. His pre coin dealer life included working at Heritage for over a decade so I definitely trust his assessment.

He even provided me with some store credit as a thank you. After using the credit I ended up with 8 coins. I'll include images of my favorite new collection piece below. It's a 1958 flying eagle with a sizeable reversed Cud. One of the other coins I received was an actual 1909 S (No VDB this time) that I needed for my album. It kind of comes full circle since that was the coin I thought he originally gave me when this whole thing started.

Thus ends the extremely fun story of how I was the proud owner of a 1909 S VDB for 72 hours. I vow to one day own one for the long-haul so that I can finally complete my Lincoln Cent set. I know some people wouldn't have given it back and I can see both sides of that argument. When it comes down to it this wasn't a coin that I cherry picked and paid for, instead it was a coin he gave me purely out of his own generosity. I would have always felt guilty if I would have kept a coin that's worth $500+ from someone who showed that amount of kindness toward me.

Anyway thanks again for all the input and here's the pictures of that flying eagle:

I agree, it is a V.D.B.
I applaud you for returning the coin back to the dealer and not profit off his mistake, don't see a lot of these honorable acts nowadays.
Did the same thing a long time ago at my LCS, found a XF 1913-S TY-2 Buffalo nickel in the nickel bin for 65 cents. Shop immediately notified, owner decided to honor the 65 cents price tag, offer declined & coin returned.
Now good friends with owner/staff, and was a volunteer/intern at the shop(too young to be hired), but may eventually be employed there.
See? Good acts pays off! :) keep it up!

@CR: You do the right thing. You have all my appreciation for. Yes maybe good value, but will be paid off. Honesty is what we start to loose and more and more speculators come up. I regret some posts here, but the forum is a free personal opinion. You do the right thing. Hat Off for you or Chapeaux in French. Italians say Atto Divino (Divin act)
Rest in Peace

Doing the right thing will work good for you. He will keep it in mind each time you come back and if there is something special, he might offer it to you first.

If you can...ask the dealer to share a pic when it comes back from grading...either way.

I doubt this coin will ever be sent off for certification/grading.
