Wow.....thats about how I can sum it up. Many of you saw my thread about finding the J-300 in another thread. I sent that coin to Rick Snow for opinions and sent him a few other coins to Photoseal. One of those coins was an 1864 No L Indian Head cent graded PF64BN by NGC. I liked the toning and it really had a nice cameo surfaces going on both sides. Rich identified this as a "thick planchet" in the slab and said it might be CN or a J-356 pattern. He recommended metal composition testing which came back today. It is 80% Copper, 10% Tin and 10% other metal, making this the J-356. Even more interesting is all known J-356 have 90% copper. There is a chance this gets a whole new sub-variety in the J-356 (J-356c)!! I did not truly cherrypick this (really Rick did!) as I bought it as a normal 1864 no L Bronze proof. @jacrispies.....here is the note I got from Rick.
"The 1864 is 80% CU, 10% SN and 10% other. That would make it a J-356. J-356 is 90% CU, so it might be J-356c (new)"

Another great find! Maybe you should think about buying a lottery ticket, as you're on a roll!

Gosh, great find and what a fascinating topic. I poked around the 1864 patterns on Heritage (not knowing anything about these) and was dumbfounded at all the varieties. The mint made all these different alloys and then rolled them out into different planchet thicknesses? And then struck them with proof and business strikes? In the middle of the Civil War? Crazy. I don't doubt that a new discovery could be made here.
