I went to my bank today that I always get my halves from and got some Presidential dollars. Why I was there I asked if they had any halves and the lady two stations down said she had a handful so I told her I would take them. She said, "whats up with these, everybody seems to want them?" Usually I will kinda lie cause I dont want any competition but she seemed nice enough so I said, "some of them are valuable and the ones made in the 60's are silver" That dang woman proceeded to come over RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and pull out 4 silvers and hand my teller the rest! I asked about the ones in her hand and she said, "Oh, I'm gonna keep these" long story short I went to the bank manager, got my 4 silvers and left thinking that I just found a new dump bank! I came back 2 hours later with $2200 in halves that I had not returned yet and handed them to the teller that did it. She took them very upset and after she was done I asked her to close my account! It doesn't really matter cause it was a account I had just to get coins from the bank. The nerve of some people! GRRRRRRR

Strike and counter-strike; not once but twice! You paid her back, and then some, for her misdeed. When you closed the account, I am sure it upset her that she could not just hand those half-dollars back to you.

Yeah, I agree- that is really rude for a teller to literally take something right in front of you that you are about to purchase at the bank. If she had done it when you were not around, that is fine and dandy but to yank them right in front of you is just uncouth and it came off like the bank lost a customer because of her crass actions I am sure a bank manager would not fire someone for an infraction like that, but it might be mentioned at her next review

That's why I always make up a story when asked why you collect them, like kids just love the big coins as rewards or something like that.

I think you just made the right decision to close your account as you won't get any silver halves there anymore because she will be first to get it. Find another bank and just be honest by telling them you collect them period. The minute you say silver they might even think the later coins are also silver.

Good job. I would have done the same thing. I always give them the excuse that my niece or nephew's love to try to fill up books and what not, they never really ask much more after that.

You gotta watch bank tellers. I had went to the local coin bank I go to a lot and got some news quarters from a asst. teller manager. A couple days past and I went back to get some more and the teller, different one, had said that they had been out of them for a while. I started to complain but I didn't because I get a lot of coins from there. I don't know if they lie becuase they are hoarding them for somebody or they are just to lazy to go to the vaught and get them. Not all of them are there are some that are helpful.

Well done Jimmy28303 The tellers at my bank know I collect them and are very nice...they have even begun to save coins for me. I hope you'll get lucky and find a bank with a nice group of tellers

I think I found a new bank to do business with. I went in yesterday and asked about halves and the lady told me that they had a bunch. I figured it was a dump and then she brought out a fed box. Although it wasnt a dump, it was a skunk. She was so nice, a little to nice, I think she was flirting. She then told me that if I wanted any boxes of halves she could order two boxes a week for me. Anyway, I left my name and number and said if ANYTHING strange comes in or more halves give me a call. She called me this morning and said that she found $160 more in halves in the vault. So I went over with some chocolates to stoke the friendly fire a little and get my halves. THEN, she told me a story that almost killed me! She said, "do you collect coins?" I told her a little and she said that she had some dimes that she wants to get rid of that a old man brought in about 3 months ago. I'm thinking old rossie's or something. She says a guy brought in $130 worth dimes with "a ladies head on it with wings"! I told her those were Mecury dimes and asked where they were now. She said she bought them cause on of the guys told her that he thought they were silver. I asked her if she would be willing to sell them and she asked how much the silver was worth. I told her I would have to check. She said, "well find out and if you want them I will sell them to you. SHE IS GONNA SELL ME 1300 Mercury dimes FOR ABOUT $1300. what a day!

Yeah that wasn't cool of the teller to do that. When I go roll hunting, I just say I'm putting together a whole set, all dates and mintmarks ( which is in fact true with Kennedy half dollars ). I find that they usually don't ask anymore questions after you tell them that. I guess I've been very lucky, all the tellers I've worked with have been very nice, and they're usually very happy to unload halves. I haven't had anything like that happen to me yet, and with any luck, I won't.

Right on Jimmy! And best of luck with the Mercs.
I went to my local bank today (one which has given me several Walkers in the past). Teller says she has $100 in halves, and asks what I am looking for, and there's "nothing good" in the rolls. When I admit that I'm looking for silver, she says she already checked. I asked her what years she looked for, testing her. She simply said she looked at the "material" and not the dates.
Turned out she missed one 40% among the $50 I picked up. Not colossal, but still proves that "searched" or "marked" rolls can still produce silver.
