Good evening all, I am fairly new to the hobby but my father used to search grab bags for fun and I stumbled upon this "grab chest" on ebay that looks like a mixed bag of items. I'm not sure I'd buy it myself but wanted the expert opinions. Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/374221814391Thanks! Edited by CrescentAngels 08/20/2022 10:13 pm

Welcome, your link didn't work.
Grab bags can be fun, but don't expect any hidden gems as they say, hit the jackpot with a valuable coin. Break even for your money or less, most often.

Steer clear from these grab bags.

$200 is too much to go gambling IMO. Put that hard earned money into something you know you are getting and will enjoy. Even if you got lucky to get $200 of value, the odds that you had $200 that you actually wanted is not in your favor.

to The Community! Short answer to your question is a resounding "No"! You'd be better off taking the 200$ to a local coin show and buying coins you can evaluate BEFORE parting with the money.

CrescentAngels: to the CCF !Grab bags usually consist of culls put together as a job lot, with perhaps a better coin salted into the mix. Some time ago, I bought a job lot of unidentified Islamic silver coins at a specialist numismatic auction. Without any knowledge of the variations of Arabic script, I managed to get a rough id on most of them by visual comparison with on screen coin images from the 'net. Afghani and some Indian coins can have Farsi script. In this case, value per coin can be doubled or more, if it is fully identified. I also bought a lot of .900 junk silver Dimes, partly for my junk silver stash, but also to do an intensive study of them. Some were put in individual 2x2's, but most ended up in the junk silver stash. Harder to make a decent profit with a modern junk silver lot.

Thanks all! I actually did reach out to the person and asked for more information and pictures and he stated he was selling this lot for his widowed aunt and thanked me for the advice and it changed a good bit. One of the biggest prices is a 1879 O Morgan silver dollar in nice shape along with some other items. Would this change anyone's mind? I must admit it made me think a little more now, but like I stated earlier I am more trying to learn do's and don'ts and not purchase right now.

very hard to get a "grab bag" at a low enough price that it will give you a profit. If just doing it for fun...knock yourself out.

The listing states "This is a lot of random coins from this chest". They then state "A few types of coins within this set" followed by a general list. But they finish up with "There is nothing specific date or mint wise guaranteed". This makes me strongly think you don't get everything shown.
I am skeptical of the "widowed aunt" sympathy inviting angle. What is the purpose of telling you that? Will that make you think that the seller or his Aunt don't know the value of the coins they will send you for $200? Or that you might get some sort of bargain?
Even if you get everything shown in the photos, you don't know what you are getting. Ask yourself why would you want to just buy some random coins?

To CCF , If your brand new just starting out as a coin collector this lot can be a lot of fun to go through with many different types of coins . But don't expect to receive any MS or Gems . Again if your a newbie you can buy a few blue Withman folders and have a ball pressing in all those circulated coins . As far as the price $200 is kind of high depending on the grade of that 1879-O Silver Dollar . Usually grab bags are not a wise decision to think you have a chance to find valuable coins ,so not to lead you the wrong way the choice is yours to make .

Thanks All! I think I understand it is a great deal possible for some but not all. I actually heard back from him and ebay removed his original post as it violated an ebay rule based on what nss-52 was stating "The listing states "This is a lot of random coins from this chest". They then state "A few types of coins within this set" followed by a general list. But they finish up with "There is nothing specific date or mint wise guaranteed". This makes me strongly think you don't get everything shown." So they made him clear things up and repost. Follow up question what grade do you think the 1879 O is? I know T-BOP stated depending on the grade it might be worth it, just wondering the thoughts?
