It is a double die. Check variety vista's web site. It is from a doubled master hub.

It appears to match FS-101 listed in CherryPickers (4th edition). Your image is better than the one in CPG but the E T R and U appear identical. It does say "Almost all 1943-dated halves exhibit some form of this doubling" and FS-101 will be removed from the next edition due to low interest factor.

Thanks for that info. From what I could get gather online, it seems to be a relatively common double die, but glad to have it attributed correctly since I couldn't find any decent pics.

If you have a Heritage account, search the archives for "1943-d 50c fs-101." There's one with the pie plate images that zooms in pretty well, but your image above is just as good. Seems like W and S show the most evidence of "true" doubling. Looking at all the 1943-D on there it seems there are a lot of them unattributed.

Quote: It is from a doubled master hub. So it is like the 1972 P-D-S cent doubling? John1

Yes, same process, but not nearly the spread seen in some of the 1972 Lincoln DDO varieties.

Look under the 1943P for the DDO for all three mints

I see a match. The fine details that show in your picture even match well. Obviously I did not mark them all. And your pics are MUCH better than the book!

@Earle42, thanks for posting that comparison. That's exactly what I was looking for. I agree, it looks like a good match! And @Onedollarbillnut, I now see that they included all the mints under 1943-P, which I guess makes sense since they might have used the same obverse master hub for all three mints.
