Australia Post have just released four new coins that customers can collect in their change or buy a set in a folder. Similar in concept to the 'coin hunt' coins. Can't help wondering if this will end up like stamps that were pumped out targeted at collectors just to make money? Are these coins worth collecting as valuable coins?

Where does this idea end? Will we see a range of legal tender coins issued by the likes of Bunnings, Kmart etc? I like to collect circulating coins but won't be able to afford to collect them all if they keep churning out nonsense coins like these. Fair enough to issue commemorative coins but this is ridiculous. What do others think?

It's a personal choice, I believe, that would narrow down to a 50 / 50 choice. Get them or don't get them. If your looking at flipping these in the future like some many others now, you would need to get them. Go back to basics and collect coins from circulation, I don't participate in these schemes, myself. If one turns up in change then I'll squirrel it away, otherwise I don't worry about anything like these so called collectables. :)

I will collect any I find in circulation but I won't be forking out more than face value for them.

This set seems to be easy to get from the post offices.
Our post office you can get as many as you want for face value.

Collectible from circulation at face value.

Over a period of about 5 years, I have built such a collection of other than definitive coins of all denominations and types, 1966 to date..

Collection currently numbers about 300 pieces.

Only a few of them have any really significant collector value.
That is OK.
My aim is to have. a representative example of each type, irrespective of value.

As they are going in to circulation, if only by being released through the post office, then yes, I feel that I need to collect them, but preferably at face value. I have trading friends in other countries too that need them, so I get some nice overseas coins in exchange.

Yes, better to get them from the Post Office in relatively good condition rather then pick them up a little worse for wear in your change later on.

I called in this morning and they were happy to give me one of each coin in exchange for $4 ... didn't even have to purchase anything!

I have to noodle them. Getting them from the post office would be cheating.

Neither - definitely bubblegum coins though.

I however will eagerly add them to my Hubba Bubba coin archives.

I do think the theme of Dinosaurs is so dated though, it was a monster (!!!) fad back in 1993.

They would be junk, if they minted like 200,000 each and charged like $39.95 + $10.05 shippage, postage, processification and pen wear fees per coin though.
