I know that this has been asked and answered before. I also know that I can not find a verified example in the research that I have done. But, for the life of me, I can not come up with an answer to this coin that I purchased in an old collection. A 1937 Buffalo nickel that looks to be a 'Black Beauty'. I have Jefferson examples and the color sure appears the same. All I can say is that I am perplexed.

Appears to be heat damage. Sometimes dark nickels are metal detecting finds, but the color is wrong. This coin has dark black and blue colors, ground nickels usually have some red in them.

I agree with PMD of some sort since the actual metal color is visible in a couple tick marks along the rim and on the date.

Also kinda looks like a major fingerprint on the reverse and a minor one on the obverse?

Nothing wrong with that Randy. People happily collect toned coins for just the same reason. While others consider it tarnish / damage and only collect pristine coins.
