Good Morning,
Asking opinions if this 1959 nickel has a real error on the date, 1959. The last 9 seems to be missing the leg and just has the circle. Should I pursue this as an error coin or toss it in the pile?
Thanks for viewing!

Hello and

To me it looks like tooling around the '9', which suggests the coin has been deliberately defaced. Maybe someone was trying to make it look like the scarce 1950-D?

Yes, does appear to have been fiddled with--looks to have been an amateurish attempt.

Just someone trying to make a 59D look like a 50D (to someone who does not know what a 50 D date looks like). Tooling marks show it.

Tooling marks tell the tail. Not a mint error, just post mint damage.
