A little background - I was contacted by email by a small dealer who has what they think is a 1969-S LMC DDO variety. I'm the president of the local coin club and an organizer for our annual coin show, so that's how he found my name. It looks to me that it's Machine Doubling, but this is well outside my area of expertise. So, I thought I'd check here just to confirm. By the way, he had recently sent it in to NGC and they would not attribute it as a DDO, and he disagrees with their assessment. Note - these are NOT my images. He sent me a bunch of pics but unfortunately they're of low-resolution and most were taken from a computer monitor, and are concentrated on just the date. If needed, I'll ask him for some clearer and higher resolution images as well as pics of the legends. Thanks for any advice/info I can forward on to this fellow.

Nope not the one you are looking for, move along. (apologies to George Lucas as I'm watching the last Star Wars installment). https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...2008/815704/This is what to look for. Note the one you posted has very flat looking doubled areas, indicative of Machine Doubling (worthless) and is very shelf looking vs. the linked photos are very rounded on both sets of numbers and how much more the LIBERTY is doubled and seperated.

If it was the big one, anybody should be able to tell. The shift on the DD is a lot more than any MD would be.

Quote: I see MD as well. Also, any dealer worth their salt should see it as MD sooo.... That's what surprised me when I looked at his pics, John1. He had initially called me about it, and I asked at some point "I'm sure you would recognize Machine Doubling, right?", and he said "Oh, of course". When I get the pics, I see what looks like to me fairly obvious Machine Doubling, but again, I don't collect varieties other than a few main ones for my type sets. I have spent a lot of time on this forum in the past year or so reading Coop's and many others explanations and discussions on varieties so have reasonable understanding, but I thought since he was so confident I must have been missing something. And, since NGC didn't attribute it, that was a bit of a red flag as well. I know they make mistakes, but not on something like this...

Agree, just MD. When you see the real thing, you'll know it instantly.

The real deal has the hub doubling: Just a common Machine Doubling coin. 1968-1972 cents Very common. Even a lot of the DDO's have Machine Doubling: Note the yellow arrows? MD on those areas.
