Well I have pretty nice and almost complete collections of lincoln and indian heads and I'm now down to the hard dates. I just bought a dansco for large cents and since their much more expensive and my first kid was just born...Ive decided to start a collection of "not so good" large cents. Should be fun to see what I can get. I bought an 1849 with a small hole in it for 3$, 1803 with just an outline of the head and barely readable date for 10$ and about 6 others that are either well worn or have a major ding in an otherwise pretty coin. Any suggestions? Think maybe Ill go metal detecting lol.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but I realized there are too many large cents 1793-1857 and the early large cents are quiet expensive so I would have to just keep the few that I have. Good Luck

Maybe just a type set of one of each of the different large cents would be nice. That way you could have a lot less expensive collection to complete and better looking coins to lead up to your others.

Everyone has their own reason for collecting a certain variety of coin. I like to hear their stories about what attracts them to a particular coin or set. I'm new to this and have realized there is no right or wrong way, Just your way. Good luck with your collection!

I LOVE the Large Cent !.....and good luck with your challenge to fill an album of them..... I have viewed this as an album I could never complete unless I hit the lottery or something, but that doesn't mean I'll ever pass on an opportunity to buy more of them and add them to my 2x2 notebook ! This is one of my favorite coins !...... But for that matter......I'll never probably get a 1909 S VDB Cent either !.......

Sounds good to me, of course that is basicly what mine is. Frankly although it is a long set it is VERY doable without breaking the budget with the exception of three years. Except for the 1804 everything after 1800 is affordable in Good or better for the small budget collector. The 1809, 1823 will cost a little more, and you aren't likely to find an 1857 in that low a grade so you'll have to buy a better one but a VF should be available and it won't break you. For the pre-1800's you will probably have to go AG or less and you won't get the 1793 or 1799. Those three bad boys, 93, 99, and 04 are going to run you about $2K apiece even in AG. All of the middle and late dates except for the 23 and 57 can probably be acquired in low grade for $15 apiece or less. The 1823 may cost $30 to $40, and the 57 may be $60 or more.

Thanks guys. So farI've had pretty good luck at local coin stores throughout NJ. I'm now shifting my attention to the web to find them.I've been leary of the large cent in the past because of all the fakes out there but for some reason I feel a little better getting them worn for that reason lol.

I also have a "very low grade" large cent collection I put together before my interests turned to other coins. I cheated and filled the Chain, 93 Wreath, and 93 Liberty cap with beautiful electrotypes, knowing there was no way I was going to afford the real deal. As for the rest, I still have a hole for the 1799, 1804, 1811 and 14 of the more common varieties. I still keep the "wanted list" in my log book and keep an eye out for them when I have any extra time at a coin show. Good luck on the hunt and be sure to check coin stores for jars of cheap type coins, I found most of my early/classic heads in jars like that. And when you are done, think of the upgrade potential..LOL...you'll be collecting for 40+ years

Large Cents are a challenge in the higher grades. Most can be obtainable for a reasonable amount of $ in the lower grades minus the keys of course. I love this series simply because old copper ages beautifully. Good luck!

With the warmer weather coming up you may want to look into flea markets. With the economy so poor there may well be people out there selling coin collections due to the necessity of not having a job. At one flea market I know of there is a guy that always has large cents and they are really just G-4.
