Hello, I happened upon an odd ohio State Quarter and it made me curious. I have never seen anything similar before. The quarter is silver on both sides.. (well looks silver like most shiny quarters)... However the edge around the outside seems to be part silver and a good portion copper. (Please forgive me for being clueless... I am new to all of this.) Any thoughts on what may have happened?

Nimerith, this could possibly be a Dryer Coin. Hopefully one of the experts will weigh in. Earle42 is an expert on these.

That is the copper core showing. Quarters are made with a
copper core clad with copper/nickel.
Can't tell by photo but it may have been exposed to acid
which ate away part of the core.
A clear photo of the edge would be required to say for sure.

@nim, first welcome to CCF.

With missing reeding and a heavy rim, I think that this is mechanical rather than chemical damage. My vote is for this to be a Dryer Coin.

Dryer Coin or spooned - hard to tell from the pics provided.

I encourage you not to hold your coins between your fingers like you are shown doing. Fingerprints can seriously damage the coins surface from oils in your skin. A better strategy is to use inexpensive cotton gloves or only handle coins from the edges. Just FYI.
