Hi all, I was just looking through some 1972 5 cent coins and wonder if these 4 are the "low echidna" variety? The gap doesn't look as wide under the SD as the others do. Also, is there still interest in them as a variety? The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.

Sorry - Just realised what lousy photos I put up. I'll take some close ups and post them tomorrow - breathe out now

These are not good pics, sorry, but it shows the comparison with Low on the left. Is it a low echidna variety?

Have you taken measurements, now I will check my 1972's for low and high varieties, oh one other thing I did a little research on the black mumba coins and found that they could be burnished coins.

The rim is thicker(obviously) on the higher Echinda Coin, probably same Die but Coin is sitting different in the collar. Other possibilities but strange things happen when machines are pumping out thousands of small coins. My 2c.

Thanks airgem, I appreciate the response. I'm giving a Hi and Low Echidna pair away as one of the prizes in my 500 post competition and wanted to verify first. You guys could go in it, closes Saturday night forum time. Yeah I know, what a shameless promotion! http://goccf.com/t/434599Allcoinage, yes I read some stuff on the black mambas. I don't see the attraction personally but some are pretty keen on them.

My 2c Yes I had the same thought, but I wasn't sure if the rim was a lower part of the die, or formed by a different process. If it was a lower part of the die then the planchets position in the collar would determine how central or offset the rim would be, and the devices and rim would always have the same positional relationship. I should research it some more. Thanks for the feedback.

They both look like high echidnas to me. I don't think the variety gets much love, but I keep my eyes out all the same.
