Hi All,
I came across this very interesting 1989 penny. There is a crescent-shaped raised area on obverse, beginning slightly under "LIBERTY" making it look like "IIBERTY", stretching to the end of "WE", as shown in photos. I would very much appreciate your input as to what type of error (if any) this might be.
Best regards!

The L looks like a partial Grease Filled Die.
The crescent shape is called a Ridge Ring caused by
Die Deterioration. It is not classed as an error.
It also has a heavy fingerprint marking.

It is a die event called DDD on the single squeeze dies.

This is the Stage 3 examples. Note the Ridge Ring? That is the first clue. Note the date devices how they are smaller, so it is not a Stage 2,

but it is past stage 3. The Ridge Ring is forming again.

On the next polishing the devices will get even smaller and the fields will be affected on the Stage 4 examples.

These are die events. So they are just die wear. When the die was new, it was a normal die. So there is no premium. The value for this is knowing what it is.

Yes ridge ring—just means the die that struck this coin was tired.

At the risk of piling on, that's a classic Ridge Ring.
