Came across this 1987 D penny which seems to have some doubling on "D" and perhaps on the date (see arrows on photos). Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Looks like DDD and or split copper plating.

DDD on the 87
Split plating on the D which is a common area for it.

And it can be both. If the area is showing gray color, then it is a split plating issue. If so, then it can start rotting as more oxygen gets to the zinc.
