@bill, other than guessing, I doubt there will be a way to be sure of the indignity suffered by your cent. The fields look textured in the pics, so maybe a light grit blasting?

Looks like you need to filter your light source to reduce glare.

Agree with the corrosion exposure assessment--possibly cleaned a bit in the past

John this is an issue that I keep struggling with, I use my smart phone and can't seem to get a superior pic. What would you suggest?

Some type of a filter between your phones light and the coin. Turn off the light/flash on the phone if possible and use a handheld LED flashlight with a filter on it.

I agree - some form of environmental damage though impossible to say exactly what caused the unusual texture.
