I recently sold a capped die strike that is en route to the buyer and just pulled this out of the stash of cents I've been going through! It's fun buying coins but hunting scores are more fun! If I had to guess I'd say this is a 1978 D but it's pretty fuzzing to say for sure. It looks like a distorted profile shifted to the east.

That's goofy looking! Nice find. Probably didn't circulate too much because it was pretty quickly noticed as something unusual.

Weight? If normal it is a struck through capped die that is deteriorating. If heavy it could be the cap on the coin. So weight would tell us a bit more.

Ha "fuzzing", I guess my typing was a little fuzzy last night.

Thanks for the comments, this was a really fun find and I agree it has some great eye appeal.

Coop- it weighs 3.05g

Okay, so it is struck through a deteriorating die cap. If it were also the cap, the weight would be increased. Thanks for the update.

I see no compelling evidence that the cap shifted position before the strike that generated this coin. It lacks any trace of correctly-facing, incuse design elements.

Thanks Mike, I see I misapplied a technical term here. I do see the difference from actual shifted cap strikes. What I was trying to describe was a flow of metal from west to east as a result of the cap being hammered and softened. Noticeable by a fairly visible LIBERTY and mostly unreadable date.
