Is the "different" S mint mark on this 1943 S one cent caused by a broken post? Looking at some of Mr. Coop's replies, I came up with that conclusion, but I probably am wrong. Also some DDD or MD on Lincoln's jacket and other places. Thanks for you help.

@jfee, the term that we use here "broken post" refers to a die chip that completely fills in an enclosed area (such as the middle of a mintmark from Denver). Since both parts of the San Francisco mintmark are open, we would use the more generic "die chips" to describe a filled in letter S.

I don't believe the loops on the S mintmark are closed, so it's not technically a broken post. Die chips or a well-placed hit?

Almost looks like the S stamp used was wore out and flattened when they stamped the die.

Cujohn.. I'm with you on your assessment about perhaps there was a worn out die or something like that. Seems to be a lot of material.. The entire coin is just about perfect with the exception of the mint mark. Thanks for your reply.

If it were a die chip, there would be no shape on the area. To me it looks like die flow lines affecting that left side of the device. Note you can see them on the field, continuing onto the mint mark. Looks more like a die issue, than a RPM issue. Something affected either coin, or the die on that area. (if a coin issue, then there will be one. If it was a die issue, then there would be more out there) Just never seen this before.

Coop.. Thank you for the follow up. It just doesn't look like PMD to me because it is so "centered" on the mint mark. The area is raised and seems to have excess material which I know is most likely not possible. Already put the coin away with my other keepers. Hope you had a great Christmas.
