Despite the nice detailing on this coin, I couldn't ago above VG-08 given the date, if that. And it wouldn't interest me even at a G-06 price.

I think most of the 1923 s dates are commonly very worn, a F12 ngc example (not the op coin just an example) -

I don't doubt the coin would grade F or higher. Just doesn't make sense to me if you can hardly read the date, but I know most will disagree, It's why SLQs and Buffalo nickels are among the few series I've never collected.

I recently purchased a Buffalo nickel album and the key dates are quite confusing.. not to mention restored dates.. I had this coin as a fine example & disagreed with whats written on the flip. I also didnt pay all that much for the coin.

Hmm, strange, I can see a trace of a 3 in the date region... Looks like it to me at least

As beautiful as this design is, I think @Jakes Coins' coin is the perfect example of why I would never collect this series. This is a $500 coin?

The date appears to be a 23S and I would grade at F 12/15, but I am with Frog on why collect a coin with a date that is almost not visible.

I agree the design is beautiful, when you can see them fully struck.

But these look pretty terrible in worn grades, especially this worn.

I am a stickler when it comes to buying coins with no readable date , It just doesn't make any sense to me . And what if it didn't turn out to be the date that you thought it was ?

I would have to agree, I cant justify a $3000+ 1916 quarter without a legible date so I doubt I will end up completing the set but you never know. @T-Bop This was part of a lot that I purchased, worse case the lot pays for almost everything or I can return the lot, Though I am pretty confident that the last digit is a 3. I will post new photos with closeups of the date / mm when I receive the coins in a week.

If you're gonna buy a semi-key date SLQ, buy one with a fully legible date
The extra money you pay up front will be worth it later on

I put together a set of SLQ with full dates without the 1916 and completed the set this year. The 23S is difficult to find in grades below VF25 with a full date. I started off doing the set raw, but when I got into the better dates, I noticed on ebay that I could get a better coin for the same money in a TPG holder as the quality raw coins were often selling for more than the coins in a TPG holder. I ended up with 9 of the coins in a TPG holder.
