One of, if not the best looking Obsolete notes, whether a remainder or issued note. All 3 Generals and Colonel, were either from Norristown, or had very close ties to the town. New p/u material.

Good looking note. Most of the examples I've seen have been remainders. I've seen it described in an auction description as a "Four Generals" type note.

This 1865 Bank of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, features 4 Civil War Union Officers, all Pennsylvania men. Clockwise from upper left: General Adam Slemmer, General Winfield Scott Hancock, General John Hartranft and Colonel Edwin Schall. General Slemmer successfully defended Fort Pickens in Pensacola, Florida; General Hancock commanded the II Corps at Gettysburg; General Hartranft was awarded the Medal of Honor and was the officer in charge of the hanging of the Lincoln conspirators; Colonel Schall commanded the 51st Pennsylvania Infantry and was killed at Cold Harbor. All had connections to Montgomery County.

Yes, most are remainders. Ive seen a few at shows that were signed and issued, but available only for stupid money.

Very nice! I know little about notes/paper money but this one looks fantastic. Will you have it graded?

That's one of my favorite notes :) I got one about eight years ago because my wife grew up in Norristown and her dad was a Montgomery County court judge for something like thirty years, so there was some extra added incentive to add it to the collection.. I also researched the people depicted on the note (except George Washington) and created a little bio sheet and put it in a lucite holder.. makes quite a handsome desk accessory :)

Wouldn't the portrait of George Washington (center bottom) count as a General ?
