This is one of the first coins I bought from a Heritage auction. That was back in the days when they offered raw coins. I believe it is Sheldon variety S-255. I later sent it in to PCGS to be graded. What are your grade opinions and comments? Thanks!

Let me star by saying that is a very nice S-255. It is practically free of any surface defects, save for a small spot on the reverse. The color is also quite appealing and the detail is sharply defined. Regarding the grade: if there is any hint of luster among the devices it would deserve an AU-something grade. For the moment I'm going with a TPG grade of AU50 to AU53. The EAC grade would be lower due to some wear I see on the drapery, the locks above the forehead, and the hair around the air and at the back of the head. All in all I can see an EAC grade of XF40, maybe XF45.

Can't argue with GERMANICVS, well put. Very nice example! I'll say they called it AU50, EAC XF40/45. If I was nit picking, it would be nice for the two verdigris spots on the reverse to be eliminated. Sans those, choice example in my book. One I'd be more than happy to own.

Agree AU-50/53 by everyday standards. Knockout coin.

Very nice ! I would to see it grade AU-55. I hope the bit of green on the reverse gets addressed before it is encapsulated .

For me it's one of those "I wish I owned it" coins.
To me it's in the AU-55 area.

nice coin. I think this is one that everyone would be happy to own. i agree with the attribution of S-255. i think TPG au50. I'm at 35 on my eac grade. I think its been recolored. its the splotchy red along the nose. I'm not sure about that assessment. if I'm wrong and the surfaces are nice and thats natural red then I'm at eac 45 and TPG 55. keep an eye on that green spot on the back. that looks like the kind of stuff that will grow on you. probably around 20th finest known for the variety. great coin.

My normal expectation for AU coins is that there will be significant luster in protected areas near the rim and around the devices. However, that standard is basically out the window for old copper. This cent has no trace of luster but was called AU by Heritage when it was listed as a raw coin in a 2000 auction. PCGS followed up with an AU-50 grade when I sent it in soon after I received it.
