Have a 1961 super shiny nickel it was a wondering this is a business strike and also would it get the Fs designation? Is it worth anything more *** Edited by Staff to Add Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

to the CCF 'Shiny' is not a good indication of a coins condition - it could be from someone polishing it. What you should be looking for is luster, which is imparted to a new coin when struck. To your questions - This is a Denver minted nickel so regardless of the luster it is a business strike coin. The steps have numerous hits which interrupt them so it is not FS. Your photos are overexposed and do not show the surfaces well, although I suspect by the significant rim hit at the top of the obverse the surfaces show wear. At best this is an AU coin - worthy of keeping in a 2x2 if you like it but no numismatic premium. Is it worth grading you ask? - absolutely by the CCF members and I just gave you my opinion. It would cost $30 to $50 to send to a TPG for their opinion. This is a 5 cent value coin. You do the math.

This is a duplicate thread on the same coin - please do not start multiple threads for the same coin. I'll ask the Moderators to lock one of these.

Quote: They are different coins. My eye says they are the same coin - observe the location of the rim hits, in particular the one on the obverse above Jefferson head at 12:00.

I agree with all that Nickelsearcher mentioned.
The obverse rim dings at K6 & K12 (and into the hair) are pretty strong so I knew the answer about sending it for grading before looking at the reverse.

@lrn, as noted above, best practice is to start only one thread per coin so I've merged your two threads.

@lrn, I hear your frustration and see that you have two nickels in the most recent post. However, previously you were posting images of the same nickel in two different threads. Sometimes this happens when you have the same file name for multiple pictures. Let's keep this thread for your nickel with the heavy rim ding at 12 o'clock on the obverse. Please start a new thread for your other nickel. Thx.

I see a well worn and dinged up nickel (top images) not worth getting graded in my opinion.

Holy cow, a full step 1961-D? The mixed photos have me skeptical. A 1961-D is the holy grail of full step collectors! In MS-65 it would sell for tens of thousands of dollars. This one being in AU condition plus some big hits is worth much less, but I'd think someone would offer you $100s for it. Keep in mind many follow the Q David Bowers approach in that hits on the steps do not disqualify full step. If the topmost images are of the same coin, i.e. if that's really a 1961-D with great steps, ANACS grading is worth considering since they follow the Q David Bowers step logic.
