I will be the first to admit, I am terrible at grading Morgans! I have just recently learned about VAMS (I know I've been under a rock). So naturally that led to me to VAM searching the Morgan Albums this morning. I just started with the Hot 50 list because otherwise it's a bit too overwhelming. Turns out I think I got a hit on this 1897 as a VAM 8 with doubled stars, doubled cap top, and slight chin doubling. It also has the full cartwheel.
What grade would you give this Morgan and what does the VAM 8 add to it value wise if anything, how do I look that up?

Looks like you nailed it. The die cracks on the rev also line up with the plate coin on VamWorld. SSDC price guide indicates that this particular VAM has little premium associated - perhaps 20% or so above normal dies. I also use Great Collection sold values as a guide.

If you're starting a VAM collection, this is a good anchor coin. Congrats on the find and condolences on the madness you're entering into!

Very nice! Definitely a VAM-8. I do agree it has a slight premium with it. If it has a full cartwheel, then I will say MS-61.

I cherry picked a VAM-8 as well last year http://goccf.com/t/428364

the 97(P) are known for fairly sharp strikes. this one is average for strike. luster is broken in various areas on both sides. lots of hits and marks on the profile, neck, hair, above the eye and obv fields. reverse has a bad hit right in the sweet spot of the breast. shes been banged around a good bit probably in a bag.

this one could be a poster child for MS61

as for value, where you look is based on whether the coin is slabbed or not and what TPG slabbed it. since yours is raw you can look in two places to get a fair market value

1. ebay sold items
2. Numismedia.com http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

Thanks for all the information. I think I found another Hot 50 - 1921-D VAM 1B1 . So many die cracks and right through her face too. This rabbit hole will keep me busy for a long while I am sure. It's fun to look at things a different way for a bit.

Your VAM 8 is spot on...
I would say MS-62
As mentioned...be careful about this VAM'n road...it can turn into a slipper sloop...
Very rewarding...but very time consuming...
