Going through some foreign coins or what are foreign to me and I came across this British 20 pence coin from 1983.
This seems to me as an excellent example of a very late die state with Die Deterioration on most all of the relief portions on the center of the coins reverse.
I know that if this were a Canadian coin such an example would be welcome in most all collections.
However being on a British coin would these be sought after by the average collector of British coins or are they pretty much ignored?
Is this commonly seen on British coins?

Cheers, Bill

Hounddog - it's not unusual to see this on 20p coins, especially 1982 and 1983. The Royal Mint was minting vast numbers and was trying to get the most use out of every die.

Some people like to put a few examples aside, but most British collectors don't get too excited about Late Die Stage coins.

Appreciate the reply NumisRob.
I'am not really surprised it's just the die tracker in me, so I'm always looking for things like this.

Cheers, Bill

I have to say, I'd never heard of 'late die state' in terms of collectability until today. My impression, although I don't collect modern coins, is that people generally want the crispest examples they can find.

I do have a hammered coin that shows the die about to break apart. However I bought it because despite that it's still an attractive example. And I have another in particularly bad condition, but that's because there are only two other known examples and it fills a gap (and was cheap!).

I can't see I'd ever buy a coin just because it was weaker than usual. I'd see this as similar to the - to me rather odd- penchant some have for buying 'Poor 1' examples!
