Echo1711, Your coin sure looks like a copper plated zinc core to me. You need to buy yourself a scale that goes down to 0.001 grams,they do not cost all that much. John1

I just re-read my post. I left out the word NOT!! It is zinc, not copper. Sorry about that. #129318;#127995;

Silviosi, are you saying 200 million copper 1983s were released into circulation? If that's the case, why would the specimens that sell at auctions go for $ 23,000

@CU: I sad that West Point deliver 200 mill to Philadelphia to be release and complete the required production. Do the release all? or just a fraction and the balance in the vault and later been melt. We has not to forgot that in 85 and 83 the Cu price was sky-rocket and for the mint to release all was lost in profits. Any way the Cent production it is not a super good business for them. Example: 1000$ cents coins cost 826$ to produce. It is around 0.0078 cent a coin and if we compare with the quarter which cost 0.038 cent to produce you can understand why the probably do not release full stock.
So me I can not say 100% those coins was release. But 100% was ship from West Point to Phil. for the production to be fulfill.
Do you know that on 1 December 1981 the CPZ production start? Do some of the blanks in CPZ pass by mistake on the 1981 production? Could be because the new presses for CPZ was installed in the begin of the November 1981.
CU I like the designs varieties and also I study the Mint History and theirs variations on the way they develop and function. Hope help not only you but the others also.

Congrats on a great DDR find! Even though the condition is rough, the doubling really pops on this coin. The split on the base of the memorial is awesome.

There is very little copper on a copper plated cent. I do not see the mint "melting" copper plated zinc core cents. Are there government records for this time period? A link? John1
