I bought a small dragon coin recently and was wondering if it is real or fake. It is a Shen-Si province 7.2 candareens coin with a dragon. It looks like it is silver.

I'd love to know where to find real dragon coins that are not fake.

Thanks,

Frank

I'm a little confused which is normal. Are the links of your coin?

Yep, those are links to the coin. Can you see them? Do you think it is a fake or counterfeit coin?

I really like the dragon coins, but it is hard to find authentic ones.

@fra, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please confirm that a strong magnet is not attracted to this piece? Also, can you please post the weight and diameter? Thx.

Hi, Spence -

Thanks so much. It looks like it measures about 19 mm in diameters and is about 2.7 grams. I've used my strongest magnet and the coin isn't attracted to it.

Appreciate any insight you might have.

Thanks,

Frank

@fra, ok good info to have and nice to know that about the lack of attraction to a magnet. I recommend you perform a specific gravity test (you'll need a better scale) to confirm that you have something resembling a silver alloy. Don't hold your breath though--it seems like most of these are fakes.

Not that well-versed with Shen-Si coins but visually, your coin's text looks a little thick, usually not a good sign for these type of Chinese coins.

Hi,Frank & welcome to the site and community!
About your coin, although it looks very real to me(very similar to other genuine coins I know, from other Chinese provincies)it is OR a very, very valuable coin OR a (well done) fake!
This, because never such coins were released in circulation by the Shensi Province!
Only a few PATTERN coins were minted in 1898.The existing pieces in our days are worth tens of thousands dollars. If you have such a coin, you are all done!!!
If not,you are the ''proud'' owner of a copy.
Andi

Thanks, everyone, for the inputs. It is probably not an authentic coin. ;)

Fake with no doubt. This province never struck any circulating silverdollar. The craft is poor also.
